BENGALURU HORROR: WOMAN BURNS BOYFRIEND ALIVE IN STAGED ‘WESTERN-STYLE’ PROPOSAL
BENGALURU – In a chilling incident that has shocked the city, a 27-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly burning her boyfriend alive after luring him into a trap under the guise of a romantic “western-style” surprise proposal.[1][2][3][4] The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Anjananagar area under the Byadarahalli Police Station limits.[2][5][6][7][8]
The accused, identified as Prerna (also referred to as Prema in some reports), allegedly pre-planned the murder and even filmed the victim’s final moments on her mobile phone.
The ‘Proposal’ Trap
According to police, Prerna and the victim, 27-year-old Kiran, were colleagues at a private telecom firm and had been in a relationship for nearly two years.[7][8][9] On Tuesday, Prerna invited Kiran to her residence while her family was away, promising him a “special surprise.”
When Kiran arrived, Prerna allegedly convinced him to participate in a “foreign-style proposal” act.[2][3][7][10][11] She blindfolded him and tied his hands and legs securely to a chair with ropes. When Kiran questioned the tightness of the restraints, she reportedly reassured him, saying it was part of the “trend.”[5][7][8][11]
Once he was immobilized and helpless, Prerna allegedly doused him with petrol and kerosene—which she had reportedly procured in advance—and set him ablaze.[2][5][6][7] Kiran died on the spot due to severe burn injuries.[6][12]
The ‘Self-Immolation’ Cover-Up
Initially, Prerna attempted to mislead investigators by claiming that Kiran had set himself on fire while she was in the bathroom.[4][7][9][11] However, her version quickly fell apart during the preliminary probe.[2][4][12]
Police identified several red flags:
-
Forensic Evidence: There was no fuel container found near the victim’s body.[11]
-
CCTV & Digital Footprint: Footage showed Kiran arriving with only a small bag, while an inquiry confirmed that the fuel used had been purchased by the accused earlier.[2][7]
-
The Video: Police seized Prerna’s mobile phone, which reportedly contained a gruesome recording of the entire act.[2][4][8]
Motive: Resentment and Rejection
Investigators suspect the crime was driven by intense resentment.[9] Preliminary findings suggest that the relationship had been strained for weeks. Prerna was reportedly upset that Kiran had been “ignoring” her and had recently turned down her marriage proposal.[4][10] There were also reports that Kiran was being pressured by his family to marry someone else and had started distancing himself from the accused.
Legal Action
“At first glance, it appeared to be a suicide, but the investigation established it was a calculated murder,” a senior police official stated.[8][12] “The brutality of recording the act while the victim was burning shows the premeditated nature of the crime.”[4]
The Byadarahalli Police have registered a case of murder under the relevant sections of the law.[2][5][7][8][9] Prerna is currently in police custody as investigators piece together the final sequence of events.[2][4][6][7][11] The victim’s body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for a post-mortem examination.[8]
