Gen Z Candidates Gain Ground in 5 Municipal Corporations; Congress Fields 49, BJP 21

Youth representation has emerged as a major feature of the municipal corporation elections, with Gen Z candidates making a noticeable entry into local politics. Across five municipal corporations, Congress has fielded 49 young candidates, while the BJP has given tickets to 21. Together, the two parties have allotted 13.72% of the total 510 ward tickets to youth candidates.

The figures indicate a growing attempt by major political parties to bring younger faces into grassroots governance and connect with first-time and young voters. These candidates are expected to focus on issues such as employment, urban infrastructure, digital services, sanitation and civic development. Their participation could also change campaign styles, with greater use of social media, local outreach and issue-based engagement in ward-level politics.
