KODAGU SHOCKER: AMERICAN TOURIST ALLEGES SEXUAL ASSAULT AT HOMESTAY; OWNER AND EMPLOYEE ARRESTED

KODAGU (KARNATAKA) – In a disturbing incident that has raised fresh concerns over the safety of solo travelers in India, the Kodagu police have arrested two men for the alleged sexual assault of an American tourist. The accused include the owner of a local homestay and one of his employees.

The incident took place in the scenic district of Kodagu (Coorg), a popular destination for international trekkers and nature enthusiasts.

The Complaint and Arrest

The victim, a female American citizen who was visiting the district alone, approached the local police to file a formal complaint detailing her ordeal. According to her statement, the assault occurred within the premises of the homestay where she had checked in just days prior.

Acting on the victim’s statement, the district police launched an immediate operation. By Monday evening, they had taken into custody the owner of the homestay and a staff member who was allegedly involved in the crime.

Police Action and Investigation

Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically those dealing with sexual assault and criminal intimidation.

“We took immediate cognizance of the complaint filed by the foreign national. The suspects were identified and apprehended within hours,” a senior police official stated. “We are currently conducting a detailed forensic examination of the site and recording witness statements to build a foolproof case.”

The American Consulate has reportedly been informed of the incident, as is standard procedure for crimes involving foreign citizens.

Impact on Tourism and Safety Concerns

Kodagu, often referred to as the “Scotland of India,” relies heavily on its homestay culture. However, this incident has ignited a fierce debate regarding the lack of stringent oversight for private tourist accommodations.

Local tourism associations have condemned the act, calling it a “stain on the hospitality of the region.” There are now renewed demands for:

  • Mandatory Background Checks: Compulsory police verification for all staff working in homestays.

  • Registration Audits: A crackdown on unregistered or “underground” guest houses that operate without government permits.

  • CCTV Surveillance: Strict enforcement of security cameras in common areas of all hospitality units.

A Message to Travelers

The district administration has urged tourists to exercise caution and verify the credentials of their stay via official government tourism portals. They have also highlighted the 112 emergency helpline, which provides immediate assistance to those in distress.

The two accused are expected to be produced before a local magistrate for remand. Meanwhile, the victim is receiving medical support and legal counsel as the investigation moves into its next phase.
