The Rajasthan government has introduced a new initiative making daily newspaper reading mandatory in all state-run schools, with the aim of strengthening reading habits, enhancing vocabulary, and increasing awareness of current affairs among students.
Under the new guidelines, students will spend at least 10 minutes every morning during assembly reading newspapers. The initiative is designed to help children stay informed about important developments at the national and international level, while also encouraging critical thinking and comprehension skills from an early age.
Education officials stated that this practice supports the broader objective of holistic learning, as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP). By engaging with newspapers regularly, students are expected to develop better language skills and a deeper understanding of social, political, and global issues.
All government senior secondary schools and English-medium schools have been instructed to subscribe to at least two newspapers, one in Hindi and one in English.
Meanwhile, upper primary schools are required to ensure access to a minimum of two Hindi newspapers during the morning assembly.
The move reflects the state’s effort to blend traditional reading practices with modern education goals and create informed, aware, and confident learners.
