Earth Day: Sattva Group and Knowledge Realty Trust launch Karnataka Zero Waste Initiative
April 22, 2026 — Marking Earth Day, Sattva Group and Knowledge Realty Trust have launched the Karnataka Zero Waste Initiative, a major environmental programme aimed at tackling coastal pollution and improving waste management systems across the state.
The multi-year initiative focuses on building community-led waste management systems along Karnataka’s 320-kilometre coastline, where plastic waste accounts for nearly 60% of coastal litter.
Key goals of the initiative
- Connect over 80,000 households to formal waste systems
- Integrate 50 coastal villages into structured waste management
- Support around 200 waste workers with better livelihoods
- Reduce plastic leakage into marine ecosystems
The project, launched in partnership with rePurpose Global and supported by non-profit organisations, aims to improve waste segregation, collection, and recycling at the source, while encouraging sustainable habits within communities.
Focus on sustainability and livelihoods
Officials say the initiative goes beyond environmental protection by also creating employment opportunities and safer working conditions for waste workers. The programme is designed to be scalable and community-driven, ensuring long-term impact.
Sattva Group representatives emphasized that protecting the coastline is crucial not just for ecology, but also for local economies and livelihoods, especially in coastal regions dependent on tourism and fishing.
Why it matters
With rising concerns over marine pollution and climate change, the initiative represents a significant step toward sustainable coastal management in India. It also reflects a growing trend of private sector involvement in environmental solutions.
As Earth Day highlights global environmental responsibility, the Karnataka Zero Waste Initiative stands out as a large-scale effort to create cleaner coastlines and more resilient communities.
