Yusuf Pathan’s relatives arrested for assault, family cries conspiracy ahead of elections

MUMBAI – In a development that has sent shockwaves from the streets of Byculla to the political corridors of West Bengal, three relatives of former Indian cricketer and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Yusuf Pathan have been arrested in connection with a violent assault case.[1][3] The arrests come at a sensitive time, prompting the Pathan family to allege a deep-rooted political conspiracy aimed at tarnishing the MP’s image ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections.

The Incident: A ‘Water Splash’ Escalates

The incident reportedly began on Saturday night near the Hirabai Compound in Mumbai’s Byculla area. According to the police, the confrontation was triggered when a local resident, identified as Yusuf Khan, drove through a waterlogged stretch, unintentionally splashing puddle water onto Shoaib Khan—a relative of Yusuf Pathan.[1][2][4][5][7][8][9][10][11]

While the complainant alleges he immediately stopped to apologize, the situation quickly turned hostile. Police reports suggest that Shoaib Khan initially attacked the vehicle’s windshield with a bamboo stick.[2][4][5][6][7][12] The conflict reached a boiling point later that evening when the victim and his family were reportedly intercepted while on their way to the police station.[3][6]

Investigators allege that a group, including Pathan’s father-in-law Khalid Khan and brother-in-law Umarshad Khan, attacked the family using bamboo sticks and baseball bats.[4][5][7][8][12] The assault left one victim with a fractured hand and another with serious head injuries.

Family Cries Foul: ‘An Attempt to Malign’

Following the arrests, Yusuf Pathan’s mother-in-law, Naseebjaan Mohd Khaliq, issued a defiant statement to news agencies, labeling the entire episode a “pre-planned attempt to baselessly defame” the MP.

“Our children were hurt as well during a scuffle that broke out between youth,” she stated.[10][11] “Since elections are currently underway in Bengal, people are using this opportunity to malign his reputation.[10][11] We have never used his name to threaten anyone. All we seek is justice for a matter he has absolutely nothing to do with.”

The family maintains that the incident has been “blown out of proportion” by political rivals who are wary of Pathan’s influence in West Bengal.

Legal Status and Ongoing Probe

The Byculla police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of causing grievous injury and assault.[4][5][8]

  • Arrested: Khalid Khan (father-in-law), Umarshad Khan (brother-in-law), and Shoaib Khan.[3][4][7][8][12]

  • Current Status: The trio was produced before a local court and has been remanded to judicial custody until May 2.[6][8][12]

  • Absconding: A fourth accused, identified as Shahbaz Pathan, remains at large.[2][4][5][6][7][8][10][12]

The defense counsel for the Pathan family argued in court that this was a “minor altercation involving both sides” and that a counter-complaint has been filed alleging that the MP’s relatives were also victims of aggression.

As the legal battle unfolds in Mumbai, the political fallout continues in West Bengal, where the TMC has often accused central agencies and rival parties of targeting its leaders and their families through “vendetta politics.” For now, the investigation remains focused on CCTV footage and witness accounts to determine if this was a case of road rage gone wrong or something more calculated.
